No worries, it's pretty much the open RHEL equivalent without being as 'test' as Fedora

I like Lubuntu & Linux Mint,Elementary OS is nice on Netbooks if you have limited screen space.

If I'm wanting to mess around with Linux should I hassle with dual booting or is a VM enough?

I've dual booted Fedora in the past for school and briefly ran Ubuntu dual boot as well just to try it.

VM is fine unless you want to like, run games or 3d environments, a lot more convenient to just change windows than to down/up the entire system into a native environment.
