Wiping the hard drive

So I've got this co-workers computer, and I'm just now getting around to seeing if I can help him out after his computer was accessed remotely by some unauthorized person. Thus far, my research has said that the best (100a effective) way, in order to protect financial account info and such, is to wipe the hard drive and re-install the Windows OS. He's prepared for that. It appears there are several free software programs to accomplish this. Is there any that stand out to you as better than others?

The biggest things for me is just to not screw anything up really bad.

Thanks.

You only need to use the windows installer to wipe then reinstall. Just delete existing partitions and then repartition then install. No additional software needed.

I wiped my drive with the Windows installer as John mentionned. If it's possible, it's really easy to use the USB Media Creation tool here.
